Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions related to joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially spinal column.
Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation, Chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound (electrotherapy), exercise and Acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle. Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, which they do very well, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other, related conditions.
Chiropractic is the third largest primary healthcare profession, behind medicine and dentistry, and is the fastest growing independent health care profession in the UK. Chiropractors are trained health professionals who use a variety of non-surgical treatments, such as spinal manipulation and mobilisation. Some examples of the conditions Chiropractors Treat:
Before the course of treatment, the patient will always be examined thoroughly. The purpose of the examination is to decide whether the problem qualifies for chiropractic treatment and also to make as precise a diagnosis as possible.
Patient’s history: the chiropractor will ask questions to get as accurate a picture of the problem as possible. The patient may be asked about working conditions, previous diseases, operations, medicine taken, as well as general questions about their lifestyle.
Before the examination, the patient will be asked to partially undress so that the chiropractor can make an accurate diagnosis. Often, the patient’s blood pressure and pulse will be taken. The chiropractor may listen to the patient’s heart and lungs or conduct other examinations.
A chaperone can be offered, as is the case with GPs, if the patient is of the opposite gender to the chiropractor and the patient feels more at ease with someone else present.
Then the patient’s problem will be examined in detail, for instance by orthopaedic (bone) and neurological (nerve) tests and by testing the patient’s joint and muscle functions.
It may be necessary to x-ray the part of the body where the patient is experiencing problems.
After the first visit to the Chiropractor your examination results and any x-rays taken are analysed. The Chiropractor will discuss these results with you and recommend a treatment plan. This is called the Report of Findings and is also an opportunity for you as the patient to raise any questions you have.

Overview sentence of therapies...
We are best known for manual treatments such as spinal manipulation, where we use our hands to free stiff or restricted joints, or mobilisation, which is the gradual moving of joints.
But we may also use other recommended treatments such as certain types of Acupuncture, Electrotherapy (Ultrasound- Interferential current therapy), stretching exercises and rehabilitation, all of which form part of a chiropractor’s package of care. We may also offer lifestyle advice to help recovery and to prevent repeated episodes of back pain.
If we believe that you can’t be helped in our Chiropractic clinic, you may be referred back to your GP or to another health professional. Chiropractors do not prescribe medication, so if this is needed, you may be referred back to your GP.
As chiropractors support a joined-up approach to care, they may ask if they can send a brief report to your GP.
As a therapeutic modality, ultrasound is a type of heat treatment for soft tissue injuries to minimize swelling and pain, minimize muscle spasms, and increase the range of motion. Creating high frequency sound waves, ultrasound reaches deep into a damaged area, creating heat that draws blood into the area in order to improve the repairing process.
Ultrasound is administered gently with a handheld soundhead, that uses strokes or circles over the pain stricken area. An ultrasound gel might be applied during the ultrasound therapy session. The role of an ultrasound is to expedite your healing time and reduce your pain.
Interferential current therapy is similar to galvanic therapy in its purpose. It drives out inflammation and sedates inflamed nerves. It is deep penetrating therapy that increases circulation, decreases muscular inflammation and promotes healing. It can also decrease pain sensation. Interferential current is another electrical modality used by doctors that has shown benefit in treating pain and muscle spasm associated with low back conditions.
Interferential current penetrates deeply with inflamed tissue and causes a comfortable sensation to the patient. Two medium frequency currents are used to intersect and penetrate the tissues with very little resistance. The intersection of the currents is placed at the desired disc level at a setting for decreasing acute pain and muscle spasm. The usual treatment time is 10 to 20 minutes.
Western medical acupuncture is a therapeutic modality involving the insertion of fine needles; it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine. While Western medical acupuncture has evolved from Chinese acupuncture, its practitioners no longer adhere to concepts such as Yin/Yang and circulation of qi, and regard acupuncture as part of conventional medicine rather than a complete “alternative medical system”. It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system, and its known modes of action include local antidromic axon reflexes, segmental and extrasegmental neuromodulation, and other central nervous system effects.
Western medical acupuncture is principally used by conventional healthcare practitioners, most commonly in primary care. It is mainly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger point pain. It is also effective for postoperative pain and nausea. Practitioners of Western medical acupuncture tend to pay less attention than classical acupuncturists to choosing one point over another, though they generally choose classical points as the best places to stimulate the nervous system. The design and interpretation of clinical studies is constrained by lack of knowledge of the appropriate dosage of acupuncture, and the likelihood that any form of needling used as a usual control procedure in “placebo controlled” studies may be active. Western medical acupuncture justifies an unbiased evaluation of its role in a modern health service.
This is a technique for stretching soft tissues, primarily muscles, fascia and tendons.
Many patients complain of having “tight” muscles. Sometimes they are prescribed stretches and experience temporary relief from the feelings of tightness. One of the reasons that basic stretching gives only temporary relief is because muscles are not uniformly tight, there may be localized areas of tension or adhesions restricting a few fibers only. When we perform active stretches, it may not necessarily be the “tight” part of the muscle that lengthens, but the part that is already more flexible. Soft Tissue Release helps localize a stretch to those fibers in the muscle that most need lengthening.

Chiropractors are often asked… will the treatment hurt? The chiropractic adjustments themselves are generally pain free, but if you are already in pain you may feel a little discomfort during treatment. At Oxford Chiropractors Clinic there are many different techniques that we can use to keep your pain to a minimum so just ask your practitioner.
No, you do not need to be referred by your GP. A GP will often refer patients to a chiropractor and vice versa if required.
When you are adjusted, dependent on the technique used, you may hear a popping sound. The popping sound is simply a release of gas when the joint is moved like popping your knuckle. It is not the bones cracking.
If you require x-rays you will be referred to your GP for x-ray service. The x-rays will then be reviewed and analysed by your chiropractor. Your x-ray results will be discussed at your report of findings visit.
It’s impossible to say as everyone is different. The number will vary depending on many thing such as your age, how long you’ve had the condition, how well you stick to the chiropractor’s recommendations, whether you’re a smoker or your own healing rate.
Chiropractic is not usually paid for by the NHS, but please ask your GP. You can pay with cash or a card. For every friend or family member you recommend to the clinic that becomes a patient we’ll send you a £10 voucher to say thank you, and you can use these to pay for your own chiropractic treatment.
